Repeated experiences have but one aim, and that is to teach what we refuse to learn. The same applies to the importance of history in our lives. History is not here only to be an added subject in school nor to merely provide dates, names and significant events to be memorized by students. History plays a vital part in the survival of any nation and the world in general because it is in the lessons of history that we learn from other's mistakes and possibly avoid it from happening again.
This is the value that I want to instill in my children and I want them to be interested in the colorful and eventful lives of the people in the past and the occurrences that gave birth to the country and the world they know now. Of course, it's not easy to encourage children to be interested in history. It's the kind of subject they would most likely veer away from, not only for fear of being branded as geeks and nerds in schools for knowing so much about a "boring" subject but also because the idea of studying the lives of people long gone offer little or no interesting prospect at all.
In order for my children to find interest in the rather unexciting subject of history, I availed of some The History Channel coupon codes to save on my purchase of several historical DVDs which I can watch together with my kids.
I have to admit that I, too, had very little interest in history during my early education. It was a subject that I regarded as nuisance to my student life and I really couldn't see the point of our history teacher making us memorize dates and names out of extremely irrelevant books (or so I thought during those days).
My view on history and the real importance it plays in our lives changed when I had a teacher in the fifth grade who opted for non-traditional teaching means. Well, that time at least, using television as a medium of teaching was not something we called traditional. That fifth grade teacher of mine taught us American history by showing us educational and visual videos that gave us a better understanding of the stuff that were plainly written in our history books. Never in my student life had I seen history in such an interesting light. Since then, I developed an eagerness to find out more about the stories of historical people and found inspiration in the noble and heroic things they did for their country.
With the available The History Channel coupons which I can readily use to get the best deals out of purchasing my choice of historical DVDs, I can encourage my children to learn more about history in a more visual and entertaining way. It's also a good way to bond with my kids because I, too, get hooked to watching the DVDs because they are all interesting and fun to watch, not to mention they enrich my knowledge of the history I learned back in my school days.
