Thanks to The Container Store coupons, a few free weekends, and a couple of day's worth of hard labor, my friend Leslie now has a clutter-free craft space. Finally, she can find what she needs without sifting though heaps of odds and ends for several minutes. You can actually see the floor, too. A huge development, considering that the last time I was there, I tripped over her die-cutting machine which was hidden under cloths and unfinished projects.
I remember when she began crafting in college, all Leslie had was a tiny shoebox of glue, scissors, glitter, and ribbons. As time went by, she began collecting craft tools and "stuff" in earnest, and as her collection grew, she needed more and more space. Soon I was tripping over things in earnest in our little dorm room as she made altered art, jewelry, and giftable giveaways.
When she finally moved into a place of her own with her husband, I was glad to hear that she had appropriated a whole basement for her projects. She called me a couple of weeks into her re-organizing of the said basement in despair, saying that the clutter had taken over and she was lost. I told her not to worry, and went online to find some online coupons that I thought would help, and told my husband I'd be visiting with her the next few weekends for an organization project.
That weekend, I showed up at Leslie's doorstep armed with a notebook, markers, several old cardboard boxes, and a bunch of The Container Store coupons, ready to go to war with the mess I'd known since college.
Leslie had just about given up on the room, and it was easy to see why - stuff spilled out from boxes, and she'd told me that she had been finding duplicates of supplies everywhere.
I placed the boxes in the middle of the room and marked each "to give away" "to keep" "to toss". We then spent a couple of weekends sorting everything in the room into the three boxes. We then went over all the duplicates in the "to keep" box, discarding some. She promptly asked her husband to remove everything else from the room, and he was only too happy to do so.
We then looked around her space and mapped out places, went online, and ordered a bunch of stuff using The Container Store promo codes. The weekend after the containers arrived was spent sorting and storing various tools and supplies in their respective containers, making sure everything had a home to stay in - even new purchases that have not been sorted yet, and scraps of paper and cloth.
When we were done, Leslie had a clean, clutter-free that was easy to maintain and didn't hamper her creativity.
