I’ve been turning to audio books lately to catch up on my reading because I can no longer find the time to leisurely leaf through books like I used to. It used to be that I finished reading one book after another, reading them before I went to bed or in between my daily obligations at work and at home. But times have changed and I don’t have the same privilege as before, and it’s something I really miss because nothing unwinds me more than a good book and a good escape into a wonderful and exciting world other than my own.
I’ve always been a lover of books ever since I was young. I remember befriending librarians so I could be informed of the newest book arrivals and get to borrow more books as well. The librarians in our school and community libraries were very fond of me because I showed great interest in reading at a young age. And it’s this interest that I brought with me to my adulthood. In fact, my love for reading grew more intense as I grew older, especially when I got to work and earn my own money because it was then that I could buy any book I wanted.
My love for reading introduced me to some of the world’s greatest authors, and it is from them that I learned so much about life. I didn’t outgrow my love for mystery, suspense and fantasy, but I also got into serious, inspirational and intellectual reading as I approached adulthood. Hence, I fell in love with the works of inspiring authors such as Paulo Coelho, Mitch Albom, Haruki Murakami, Nicholas Sparks, among many others. Of course, I also became a great fan of J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series, which I really got addicted to. In fact, I was one of the millions of people all over the world who reserved a copy of every Harry Potter sequel months before its scheduled world-wide release. And once I got my hands on every much-awaited Harry Potter book, I would be lost in seclusion in my room for the next two days as I engaged in a marathon reading that would deprive me of sleep and regular meals.
However, I can no longer do that now because, first, I’m practically tied up with my work and other obligations that I just don’t have the spare time to devote to reading. Second, my eyesight has gotten messed up with too much exposure to computers, and I usually get a headache trying to read small scripts from magazines and books.
It’s a good thing that there are now welcome alternatives to traditional book reading, such as audio books. With audio books, I don’t need to strain my eyes reading small scripts on the pages since I just need to conveniently listen to the words being read. It’s also not time consuming because I can listen to the books being read to me while I’m driving to work, doing the groceries, waiting for my food orders in restaurants, walking down the street, cleaning the house, washing the dishes, doing the laundry, and so on and so forth. In short, I can listen to my audio books while doing everyday tasks and regular activities.
